Books in the Community
To fulfill the community outreach mission of Friends of the Knox County Public Library, the Sales and Distribution Committee works with area agencies to provide books and materials for underserved populations in Knox County: the elderly in assisted living facilities, individuals who are incarcerated, families in homeless shelters, children in subsidized after-school daycare programs, and others.
A team of volunteers takes requests from agencies, selects appropriate books and materials, and arranges for delivery or pickup at the Friends @ Rothrock Used Book Shop in Lawson McGhee Library. Friends also relies on monetary donations to purchase books when it is impossible to meet the needs of agencies with donated books. Agencies, in turn, use the Friends logo in their publications and maintain a cooperative relationship with the organization as a whole.
Representatives of agencies were also invited to the final day of the 2019 Used Book Sale to select books for their organizations.
